Why do hunters use treestands?

Hunters use treestands primarily to avoid detection by animals. Elevating themselves off the ground allows hunters to be less visible and less likely to be detected by the animals they are hunting. Many wildlife species have evolved to recognize threats at ground level, and being higher up reduces the chance of startling them. This elevation also helps to mask human scent, which can drift down to the ground, further enhancing stealth and increasing the chances of a successful hunt.

While staying warm and finding a higher vantage point may be secondary benefits, the primary intention is to remain concealed from the quarry. Being closer to the ground, on the other hand, would likely increase visibility and scent detection, making it less effective for hunting purposes.
